Chicago Area Surgeon Conducts First Minimally Invasive Stand Alone Atrial Fibrillation (AF) Procedure Using the ESTECH COBRA® Adhere™ System

DANVILLE, CA, September 19, 2005-- ESTECH, Inc. announced that David Jayakar MD, Chief of Cardiac Surgery at St. Catherine Hospital, East Chicago, Indiana, successfully completed the first minimally invasive cardiac ablation procedure ever performed using the ESTECH COBRA® Adhere™ Ablation Catheter System.

The surgery was successfully performed by Dr. Jayakar on a 42-year-old patient with chronic AF from Indiana. He was the first patient to receive the surgical ablation procedure with the innovative device that combines the proven COBRA® RF ablation technology with a novel suction stabilizer. The ground-breaking technology allows Dr. Jayakar to maintain contact of the device with the epicardial surface of the heart while it is beating; therefore, enabling a minimally invasive approach to the surgical ablation procedure. This is the first procedure conducted where a complete lesion set could be performed minimally invasively. Previously, Dr. Jayakar completed a series of six other stand alone AF ablation procedures using the ESTECH COBRA® Adhere™ Catheter System; 100% of the patients, post discharge, were in normal sinus rhythm.

Dr. David Jayakar said, "The ESTECH COBRA® Adhere™ Catheter System allowed us to perform a procedure that cannot be done with any other product on the market today. This is critical technology for enabling minimally invasive techniques." Dr. Jayakar went on to comment, "Innovative technology such as the COBRA® Adhere™ Catheter System will help us to achieve safer, more effective endocardial and epicardial procedures, that offer the ability to perform a complete lesion set, significantly improving patient outcomes. With more than 2 million people in the US who are currently living with AF and another 160,000 new patients afflicted with this disease every year, I am looking forward to the opportunity of offering more patients this innovative temperature controlled technology which has shown a greater than 85% cure rate in more then 150 cases in my practice."

ESTECH's Vice President of Business & Product Development Steve Geyster commented, "The ability to perform a more complete lesion set using precise temperature control in a minimally invasive fashion gives us a significant advantage over other companies using impedance based technology such as AtriCure (ATRC) and Medtronic (MDT)." Mr. Geyster went on to state, "ESTECH is the only company to offer products for all aspects of RF ablation, including COBRA® endocardial/epicardial probes, bipolar probes, and the COBRA® Adhere™ family of products."
